Nurse #2 Memoir

Many things happen as a nurse that can be entertaining and should be shared. This is another one from me to post for your viewing enjoyment.

Many years of learning and experience have taught me so much about people and their actions.  This action by a fellow nurse is one I don't think I will ever forget. I know of several other nurses that this incident will not ever forgotten too.

Through nursing school the rule of thumb on a specimen, of any type is, "If in doubt, don't throw it out".  Maybe that is why the specimen was not thrown out.  At times specimens, of all sorts, are not immediately labeled which is the case of this container left on the front desk of the ICU/CCU section in a hospital.

It was not a very busy day and the beds in ICU/CCU were not filled.  Several nurses, including me, were at the front desk when a quandry about  a container with some light yellow fluid was in question by the head charge nurse. No one seemed to know where it came from and did not know what it was when asked by the charge nurse.  After not getting the answer from anyone, the charge nurse picked up the container and put it to her mouth and drank some. Before she was able to spit it out, she realized it was the urine from the new admission. Without wanting to admit what she had done, she boldly said, "I thought it was apple juice"."It looked like apple juice and the only way to know was to taste it".

The nurse that was admitting a new patient surfaced from the new patient's room and asked what happened to the new admit's urine sample. The charge nurse was agast that she had drank it, so was speechless. The other nurses stood without saying anything out of shock that such a thing was done.
