Here are the right questions to ask people especially when it comes to their development.

When it comes to developing people there are several questions you must ask yourself.

Step1

Am I developing people or am I building my dream and using people to do it? Are my people coming first? Manipulation is moving together for my advantage. Motivation is moving together for mutual advantage.

Step2

Do I care enough to confront people when it will make a difference? Confront vs Clarify? If you don't like the word confront then change it to clarify because this is what you are truly doing.

Step3

Am I listening to my people? Am I listening to their words?

Step4

What are the strength of the person? People who typically work in an area of weakness instead of personal growth will not stay motivated. If you put people in an area of their strength you will see an improvement in their motivation.

Step5

Have I placed a high priority on the job? People stay motivated when they see the importance of what they are doing.

Step6

Have I shown the value the person will receive from this relationship? People stay motivated when they see the value of what they are being asked to do. They need to know what is in it for them?

Once you have asked the questions and then get your answers you will be able to determine what is the next step in their development.  Be prepared for the answers you may receive and know that this will make you a stronger manager and leader in the end which will in turn make them a better employee
