How to steps to motivate your kids to learn to out of your bed

The how to on what you can do to motivate your kids to learn how to get our of your bed and sleep in their own bed every night. Things You’ll Need:

  • Patience
  • Game Plan

Step1 Create a fun atomsphere for your child. Make sure their room is a place that they enjoy and want to spend time in. It is a not a place of punishment. It needs to be an oasis for them. A place they can go to have fun and relax. Just think about your own bedroom. The reason that they like your bedroom is because they get a sense of security and relaxation from your room. Provide the same for their room.

Step2 Think about the size of the bed that works best for your child. Do they want a theme-type bed or just an average twin? Also determine when it is best to move them from their crib to the new bed if you have not done so already. Their bed needs to be a place of comfort and security.

Step3 Brush your TEETH! Develop a bedtime routine. Brush your teeth, get your pajamas on, go to the bathroom, read a bedtime story or sing a song. You can also do fun things like talk about what they liked about their day, say a bedtime prayer, or even tuck in their own baby dolls. Make it fun! It is important for them to always want to do things not dread them. Don't forget the bedtime kiss for your them! It helps them sleep better...

Step4 Don't lie down with them- Teach them Independence! Do not lie down with your child! When you do this then they can not go to bed by themselves and this is so important for them to do. This is the beginning stages of teaching them independence. They will thank you someday for this.

Step5 Have your child pick out a special toy to sleep with Establish the rule that they will go to sleep in their own bed all night long- NO EXCEPTIONS. Make it a celebration. Maybe- "now that you have your big boy bed you get to pick out a special toy to sleep with every night." Show them how exciting it is that they have earned this right "to sleep in their own bed".

Step6 Don't be weakened by your child's cries- Stick to the Plan Don't let your child become unsuccessful at sleeping by themselves by giving into their cries, whining, and getting out of bed. I think if you can really show them how exciting it is to sleep in their own bed and let them know it is not punishment but a true reward for being a big boy or girl then you may help them towards their success of sleeping by themselves.

Step7 GOOD SLEEP equals a HAPPY CHILD in the morning! Even though this process may cause you some sleepless nights because you are continuously walking them back to their room the reward in the end will be more SLEEPFUL (not a word) nights. Having a child in your bed typically does not allow you good sleep anyway so if you can get them in their own bed you will actually gain more sleep in the long run.

Tips & Warnings

  • I know this is all easier said than done but I think with a lot of hard work, determination, and a game plan the task can be accomplished. Just remember in the long run your child will definitely thank you for your determination even though you may not get an official thank you.
  • Don't be tormented by your child's cries or fits. Remember you will be assisting them with developing good sleep patterns will benefit them now but also in the long run.
