Abortions

Many opinions have been written about abortions through the passage of time, either for or against. Opinions, which are really tough to contradict as both sides have strong arguments to come forth. In this article, i will try to analyze some of them.

There is a great percentage of people, who think that having an abortion is like committing a murder accusing not only the mother, who decided to make such an act, but the doctor, who performs the surgery as well. Despite the catholic admission of the medical world that when the abortion is being held, there is no life as there is no baby but an embryo, still many can't accept this argument. They just don't make any distinction between an embryo and a baby and they cannot accept it as it will end up killing a human life no matter what.

Religious beliefs are added to the above moral claims. No one has the right to end a life, even if it refers to a fetus because there is the potentiality to become a human and therefore, it has rights. Religion says that since a baby is conceived, soul is being blown in it. Automatically, that means that when a woman is taking the decision to have an abortion she is committing a sin.

Another claim against abortion is that, nowadays, we are facing a huge problem of low birthrate. The increasingly low birthrate combined with the enlarged ageing of the population puts in danger the foundations of nations. Families have decreased the number of children to one or two, but, as the statistics hold, most common these days are families with one child. Parents choose this option mostly due to financial reasons having the belief that, this way, they will offer a better life to their child.

Anti-abortionists also claim that even if there is an unexpected pregnancy there is always the probability of an adoption. There are many families that are not blessed with the gift of a child and they will beg for at least an opportunity to take care of one. There is a huge line of families waiting for a phone call that will announce them that they will finally become parents. Anti-abortionists claim the lost love, joy and happiness that these families would offer to a child that would never be born if a woman makes the decision to have an abortion. Choosing the adoption, a woman can minimize the practical consequences of an abortion, while simultaneously avoids the hardest trauma of this action.

Some people also say that such an action causes a series of bodily and psychological damages. Aborting a fetus is a really intense process. The main causes of death due to an abortion are bleeding, inflammation, anesthesia and not diagnosed gestations. There has been an article that legal abortion is the fifth reason of death in women in the USA, which is a really shocking rate. Medical resources mention that when a woman is having an abortion at her first pregnancy, the risk of breast cancer is almost doubled up. In addition, ovary cancer, liver cancer, perforation of uterus, children with health problems at the next pregnancies, permanent abdominal pain and convulsions are only some of the side effects of having an abortion. Moreover, a woman that has an abortion experiences severe stress and often guilt, a feeling that cannot be easily anticipated. She starts wondering if she has taken the right decision, if it was really her only choice and all this can lead to a nervous breakdown.

But, as every story has two sides, the same goes here too. Pro-abortionists have strong arguments as well that a really great percentage of people adopt.

To begin, one of the main reasons that an abortion should be considered justified is health problems. There have been many cases where the embryo was diagnosed with severe health issues such as infirmity, partial or total hereditary illnesses, heart problems, syndrome ‘’DOWN’’ and so on. In these cases, the mother should have the right to decide if she wants to end this pregnancy or not. And that is for the quality of life of her unborn child, not for her own good. At this point, we must also add the probability where the fetus puts in danger the life of the mother. An embryo that does not grow up right may cause serious complications that may lead to the mother's death.

Additionally, we cannot overlook the case where a woman is a rape victim and gets pregnant. Abortion is the only way fro this woman, who inevitably she may see in this child her rapist’s face. There are also cases that, unfortunately, a woman is raped from a family member as a young girl. Again, in such cases, abortion seems to be the only choice.

To continue, another common reason of abortion is when a woman gets pregnant really young, even before graduating from college. In the event of becoming a mother, fear is the first feeling she gets. Fear of how she will tell this to her parents, fear of how her boyfriend will react when he finds out, fear of how her life will be from then on.

To supplement the above claim, there are women that face pregnancy in the age above 40 or 45. These women choose abortion not only for health problems, as pregnancy in that age might be dangerous, but for social reasons too. For example, they cannot accept the fact that when they will take their child to school, other children or their parents will probably say "oh, your grandmother is so sweet". Parents at this age also don't have the courage of raising another child, and having to stay up all night when the baby cries, changing diapers and feeding and so on. For some people it is hard to do.

Those who are in favor of abortion also believe that this is a solution when the mother is going to raise the child on her own especially when this woman has no funds, no steady job and no boyfriend or family to help her. They believe that this way, not only she, but the child as well, are not going to have a good life after all. As they claim, opposing the ones that say that all a child needs is love, not having money to offer to your kid what is necessary, not being able to send it to a good school, not being able to raise it the proper way, will cause both a significant level of stress and a feeling of inferiority. And it is not only the financial reasons that come in the way. Society can be really cruel with single mothers and typically they face depreciatory confrontation from their social environment.

To sum up, it will be utopia to say that no woman will ever have to face the possibility of an abortion. But it is also needed not to abuse abortions. And that goes for both sexes. Necessary precautions are needed to be taken from both so not to have to deal with the repercussions of an act. Abortion should be justified only when justified reasons exist.
