The Affenpinscher
A quick overview of the playful little pets.
The Affenpinscher is one of the smaller breed dogs. They originated in Germany and it is thought that they were originally used to keep rodents away. The Affenpinscher is commonly referred to as the "monkey dog" and Affenpinscher literally translates to monkey like terrier. In France they are known as "Diablotin Moustachu" which translates to mustached little devil.
The Affen is a territorial dog and will protect its family and its possessions. The little dog is energetic and brave, but also loving and attentive when their owners need them to be. While a very stubborn dog, they are also very intelligent and can learn many tricks including how to walk on their hind legs. These dogs come in many different colors and are not prone to many health issues. The two biggest health concerns with the Affen are hip dysplasia and cataracts.
While they originally were between 12 and 13 inches tall, they are now a bit smaller averaging only 9.5 to 11.5 inches tall and weighing 7-8 pounds. Their litter size averages from 1-3 pups, usually 2 per litter.
This wire-haired toy dog breed is fun-loving and playful, but also loving, nurturing, and friendly. They are loyal and will love and protect their family at all costs as long as the love is returned. If you are considering a toy breed dog, and want an upbeat companion then this little pup is right for you. They are very family friendly, but be careful if you have small children about toddler age because the Affen is similar to a toddler in the fact that they do not like to share their toys and may get a little snippy when the baby wants to play with them. All in all, a very good little companion.
