A poem about what happens to our pets when we can no longer take care of them

Amidst the ruble and the ruin of this old rundown house,
I searched for morsel or maybe even a mouse.
I'm so hungry all the time now and water is so scarce.
I used to have family who really loved me and cared.
The nights are cold and lonely at best.
I miss my owner's lap of which I used to sit upon and nest.

In the daylight hours I sleep most of the time.
I keep dreaming that things will somehow be fine.
I am a survivor. Of course, I'm feline .
But I can't stay alive being confined.
Why they left I will never know but I really wish they hadn't had to go.
So, every day I sit in the window and bask in the sun.

I reminisce of the games, toys and great fun.
What's that I hear? A knock on the door?
Please come in I'm here on the floor.
I've been here so long I thought no one would find me.
Your face looks wonderful, so warm and so kindly.
It's been a long time since someone hugged me tightly.
I used to dream of this wonderful feeling nightly.
Can we go now? I don't think they're coming back.
After all I'm only a cat.
I used to be a family member, once upon a time I had a life.

Why my family left me here, I'll never know why.
Didn't they love me? Then why did they leave, oh why?
I need a new family, a new start to a new life.
This kind gentle lady says things will be nice.
I'll stay in a cage for bit and make some new friends.
Maybe one day I can begin my life over again.
Come see in my new place, you won't recognize my face.
I'll have a new home and a family anew.
And if you come see me, maybe it will be you.

I wrote this poem to help raise awareness for pets that are being abandoned every day all over the United States for so many reasons. Some folks loose their jobs, their homes or have personal tragedy occur in their lives. However, don't abandon your pets. Bring them to a shelter or try to find a home for them yourself. Please help your local shelter with donations of food, money, and time. Look up the shelter nearest you and ask them what they need and try to help. Animals are not disposable nor are people but people have a voice. Use your voice to help an animals since they cannot speak for themselves.
