Things that may help you when you have to downsize.

In today's economy there are more people losing there homes, or simply having to move into a smaller one. It is a very hard process for you and your family. These are a few tips that you can follow that may help you make it a little easier.

You should try to look at this as something positive. I know it is very hard, but try. Think of it as a new beginning for you and your family. Even if this is impossible for you to do, try to give your family the impression that you are not worried about it.

Things to ask yourself when deciding on an item:

-Will it fit into the new home?
-Is it important?
-Can I live without it?
-Have I used it in the last year?
-Is it functional?

If one or more of these questions are no, you probably do not need it. You should consider getting rid of it.

Consider what you will do with the items that you are not keeping, and are not trash. You can donate them, give them to your family, or have a yard sale. The yard sale may be a great option for your family. You will reduce your items in your new home, and make money for other things you may need.

Start with your larger items in your home. Decide on pieces that are functional for your new home, and be realistic. If the furniture will not work, get rid of it. The best thing is to sell the larger pieces of furniture, unless you have a family member that may need it.

Now that you have decided on your furniture, pick a room and start preparing it. You should have a box for keep, donate, sell, maybe or give away, and a box or bag for trash. If you are completely certain about the item you can put it into separate boxes. If you are unsure about an item, leave it out until you have finished the room. You can then sit down and make a decision on your items.

After you have completed each room. Find a central location to put all of your keep boxes. Look at them and ask yourself if they will truly fit into your new home. If you honestly do not feel everything will fit, find some items that you can do without. If you do not want to do it at this point, you can wait until you have it all in your new home.

If you are purchasing new items for your home, be sure the items are functional. Use the money you have made from selling other items. You may also want to purchase items that can help you organize your new home. This may help you keep some additional items.

Take your time with this process, if you are able. This is a hard process, and you may tire much easier. Be supportive to your family, and try to have supportive people helping you. Be organized, and try not to overwhelm yourself more than you have to.
