How to Save Money on Your Home Heating Bill

Step1:

Replace your old thermostat with a programmable one. This is one of the most cost saving devices you can invest in. With a programmable thermostat you can set the day and night time you need heat the most along with the temperature setting you want.

Step2:

For the night time, when you are sleeping, there is no need to heat up your entire home so you are comfortable in your bedroom. By purchasing an energy efficient electric heater you can sleep comfortable in your bedroom all night. Your home can be heated a half-hour before its time to get up in the morning.

Step3:

Check all windows for drafts. If your windows are drafty, you can purchase shrinkable plastic window covers that will eliminate any drafts. You can purchase these kits at your home center and they come for all size windows. Once the plastic is installed around the window, use a hair dryer to shrink the plastic to size.

Step4:

If you have a wood burning stove or fireplace in your living area, use it. With a few logs on the fire you can heat up your living area for hours at a time.

Shut heat off to any un-used room. Why waste the heat when it can be used in your living area.

Check the amount of insulation in your attic or crawl space. Chances are you don’t have enough and may need to add an extra layer. Check with your local building code to find out how much insulation you should have. Since heat rises it may be escaping through your attic.
