Tips on how to get more space on your computer or laptop.

Get more space on your computer or laptop.

If you are running out of space on your computer's hard drive, you'll need to free up some space quick. Not only will running out of space mean you'll have to find another place to store your digital life, but a filled or mostly filled hard drive can slow down your computer and even prevent it from functioning properly.

Consider the following tips to get more space on your computer quick.

Empty the trash - You should regularly empty your computer's recycle bin or trash can. That is the little trash can on your desktop, start menu, or dock. You should empty it about once a week, especially if you are always deleting files to make room for a new file on your computer.

Delete the temporary internet files - When you browse the internet your computer saves cookies, site information, and other data on the sites you visit. It does this so that when you return to said sites, they will load quicker and remember some of the information from your previous visit.

You can delete these files in your browser window and should do so about once a week or so. Depending on which browser you use, the option to delete these files should be under the Tools or Preferences option on the browser menu bar.

Delete temporary files - Sometimes programs create temporary files on your hard drive to better allocate and make use of available system resources. Many programs will remove these temporary files automatically when the computer is restarted, but some are left behind. Over time these can slow down your computer and take up valuable space. On Windows computers, you can find an option to clean up these files under Control Panel.

Remove old programs - If there are programs on your computer that you don't use or haven't used in a while, consider deleting them. This can free up large amounts of space. Just be sure to remove the programs with their included uninstaller if available. Simply deleting the program folder may leave behind files and cause problems later down the line.

Purchase and external hard drive - The prices on external hard drives keeps getting lower and lower. You can get an external hard drive to store extra files on that you want to keep but only use sometimes. Files like music files, movie files, videos, and pictures can take up a lot of space on your computer. Moving them to an external drive keeps them available while freeing up your computer's hard drive. Plus external hard drives are a great way to back up your computer data.

Upgrade your hard drive - What is the best way to get more space on your computer for the long run? Upgrade to a bigger hard drive or add an additional hard drive. Like external hard drives, the low prices of internal hard drives get you more gigabytes of space for your dollar. Make sure you check your computer specifications to ensure you get a hard drive that fits in and works with your computer. You can easily double or quadruple the amount of space on your computer by upgrading to a larger, faster hard drive.

If space is an issue on your desktop or laptop, keeping these tips in mind will help you get more free space on your computer. If you can afford to, purchase an external hard drive or upgrade your internal hard drive as this is the best way to really boost your storage space on your computer.
