A guide for running for office at your college, university or school.

Student government is a great activity to have on your resume as a leadership experience.  Serving and helping your local community weather it be your neighborhood community or college or school community is a very humbling opportunity.  This is usually a volunteer position and does not pay any compensation for your time.  If you decide to run for office at your local college, school or a university, the best way to go about it is to contact the student affairs office and talk to the adviser there.  Usually you have to do following things to be successful.

Make sure you have an intense desire to run for the office and contribute to the college or school community.  Working for the Student Government is a very time consuming but fun activity.  Make sure you have enough time for your studies while you are working on this.  Time management will play a major role in how you balance the studies and your position with the Student Government.

First of all to run for the office you need to run a successful campaign.  Running a campaign costs money.  The budget will be allocated by your Student Body office.  You cannot surpass your budget limitations.  It is against the law to spend extra money on your campaign.

For campaigning you need all the help from your friends and fellow students to help you out.  Tell them to educate the other students about the elections and how you are running for the office.  Tell them to promote your agenda.

Your agenda should be appealing to the general student body at your campus.  Make sure it is about enhancing student life on campus and easing the time students spend while in school.  Devise your plan carefully after talking to students.  Make sure you carefully consider all pros and cons of the issues at hand.  Be aware of the agendas of other people running against you for the same position.

Be ready for a debate on the issues.  You might be required to make certain amount of speeches as well to have the word out.  Carefully plan your speeches as the students will vote for you based on your speech content, confidence of delivery and professionalism.  Also, don’t forget to dress for success during the campaign.  A professional look goes a long way.

Make great posters after carefully planning the content.  Don’t break the rules.  There are usually rules on how to make posters and what you can put on them.  There are also regulations on how many posters you can make and where you can post them.
