If you are setting up your first home or someone who likes to be prepared- this is a recommended list of how to stock your medicine cabinet. The items can be purchased piece by piece so don't stress if you cannot buy it all at once.

Must have's: Pain relievers or reducers, antibiotic cream (neosporin, betadine, bacitracin), tweezers (for splinters), rubbing alcohol, cotton balls, band aids (various sizes)-1 box of variety packs works great!, Antacid (Tums, Rolaids), thermometer, cotton swabs, sunscreen, spare tooth brush

  • Step 2

Recommended: ace bandage, adhesive tape, hydrocortisone cream (great for insect bites, eczema), anti diarrheal, heat pack, ice pack, itch medicine (calamine lotion), Bactine (soothing mouth wash),

  • Step 3

Recommended "Over the counter medicines": cough syrup, cold/allergy medicine, antihistamine and decogestant

  • Step 4

Just in case recommendations: mild laxative, petroleum jelly, syrup of ipecac (to induce vomiting - helpful for homes with small children), hot water bottle, eye cup and over the counter eye wash, ear drops (swimmers ear and/or ear wax)

  • Tips & Warnings
    • Most items should be kept in a cool, dry place -- so your bathroom cabinet may or may not be the ideal location. (not all the items may fit in a cabinet)
    • Highlight the dates of over the counter medicines (they expire quickly)
    • If you have children, keep children's versions (pain medicine, cough syrup, allergy, thermometer etc)
    • FSA and Pre-tax dollars: Many of these items are eligible for Flexible Spending advantages. If you are set up for flexible spending (FSA) through work this is a great way to purchase your items and/or use up remaining funds
    • This list is not comprehensive for everyone. Tailor accordingly for your family's needs
    • Keep dangerous drugs up and away from children (they are very curious)
    • Please check with your employer to find out if Flexible Spending Plans are offered. If you are unfamilar with them, they will explain how it works and what is eligible under the program.
