This article looks at what hairstyles flatter a square shaped face.

Your face shape is one of the most important things to consider when choosing a hairstyle. A square face is almost as wide as it is long and features a broad, angular jaw line. When it comes to selecting a hairstyle there are two main goals. The first is to visually increase the length of the face. The second is to diminish the angular appearance of the jaw.

There are lots of different ways to flatter a square face, some of the best hairstyles for square faces include:

1. Asymmetrical parts

Center parts are to be avoided because they emphasis your strong jaw line. Off center parts take the edge off this feature. Side swept fringes work a treat. You can experiment with slightly off center parts right through to deep side parts that begin over the opposite eye.

2. Layered styles

When you have an angular look to your facial structure, you benefits from a softer hairstyle. So avoid blunt and geometric cuts and instead try injecting some movement into your hair with long layers. Soft layers around the face can really help soften your jaw line.

3. Curls

Curly styles are another great way to diminish the angular appearance of your jaw line because they are a very soft look. Wavy styles are equally as appealing. Think Minnie Driver and her characteristic square face and corkscrew style curls.

4. Soft bangs

To balance the angular nature of your face, a soft fringe can make the world of difference. Ask for a feathery style, rather then a blunt one and stick to longer, rather then shorter fringes because these help elongate the appearance of the face. Styles that are pulled back from the face can draw attention to your jaw; this can make your features look very severe. So even if you don’t go down the path of bangs, always leave a few tendrils loose around your face.

5. Volume at the crown

When it comes to the cut, you want to ask for one that is fuller on the top. This will help visually lengthen the appearance of your face. Half up half down styles can work well, along with up dos and ponytails that include volume at the crown.

6. Take care with short hair

Generally those with a square face look better with a hairstyle that extends past their chin. However depending on your lifestyle and hair type this might not be altogether suitable. If you’d like to wear your hair shorter, choosing the right style is crucial to a flattering look. Soft, elfin styles can look good, depending on the slope of your neck. Or perhaps try the recent asymmetrical style sported by celebrities like Katie Holmes.

When it comes to selecting a hairstyle make sure you also consider your hair’s texture, your body shape, time constraints and lifestyle. A hairstyle needs to suit all of these criteria to be both flattering and achievable.
