Use words related to nature to increase your vocabulary.

There's no easier way to sound comfortable with the English language than to make it sound natural-literally. Essential aspects of nature such as the elements of wind and earth are very basic, vital tools that we use in language to connect to others.

These words stir basic human response due to their very obvious imagery. They also allow poets in particular to offer a softer, more refreshing vocabulary.

Foliage

Definition: Collectively, the leaves of a plant, tree or bush.

Example: Pursued by the English, the Irishman sought refuge behind some foliage while he pondered a new strategy.

Connotation: Typically, this word is used in a poetic sense. It is often found in fiction, poetry, and design.

Incandescent

Definition: Brilliantly clear; bearing a source of light; aglow, producing heat.

Example: The incandescent glow of the firefly in the near distance led me home.

Connotation: This word is usually associated with an emotional brightness; a hope, an innocence.

Oxbow

Definition: The land surrounded by an extreme bend in a river; the bend of the river itself.

Example: The conquistador decided to land just after the oxbow; he didn't realize how soon his demise would occur.

Connotation: Usually, this word occurs in fiction, science, or in Southern and Midwestern American English.

Tempest

Example: After three months of being lost at sea, even the pirate was grateful to step off of the vessel and onto terra firma.

Connotation: This phrase is often used to describe, in comparison, the unique comfort that one finds in the earth after not being upon it for some time. Typically, it is considered a phrase used by educated persons. It is Latin.

Zephyr

Definition: A gentle breeze, usually emanating from the western direction; anything airy or without rich substance.

Example: Looking to the setting sun, the warrior's bloodied face was calmed and cooled by the caress of an evening zephyr.

Connotation: The gentle nature of the breeze is the essence of this word; most other words about winds and storms describe turbulent and violent actions. This is a great word to use in place of the phrase 'a gentle breeze,' which is used with frequency.

Utilizing these words in daily situations will allow you to embrace the fundamental power and sway of nature. Use it to your advantage.
