Optimizing battery life in iPods
Tips on how to make the most of your iPod's battery life.
Optimizing battery life in iPods is the best way to ensure you'll be enjoying your music, movies, and pictures on your iPod for hours on end. Optimizing the battery life in your iPod will also ensure that you'll get the most life out of your battery before needing to replace it. Follow these easy tricks and tips to optimize the batter life, prevent rapid battery drain in your iPod, and get the most out of every recharge.
Dim the lights -
One of the things that drains a laptop or iPod battery quick is having the brightness setting on your device set to high. Most of the time you don't need the brightness levels at their max, so lower it down a few levels and conserve battery power. Set it at the lowest level where you can still comfortably view and read everything on the screen for maximum benefits.
Set it and enjoy -
IPods have made it easy for us to put our whole music collection in our pockets and change our daily soundtrack in seconds. But switching songs often, changing artists, and browsing the menu all drain the battery quicker than simply picking a playlist or artist and letting it play. This is because every time you scroll through the menu in your iPod and select new music you are not only triggering the screen lighting to activate, but also using power to operate the scroll wheel, and taking up battery resources needed to switch to a new song or movie.
Lower the volume -
We all know that listening to headphones or ear buds at high volume can cause damage to our hearing. But high volume playback also taxes the iPod's power system and means you'll use up more battery power on fewer songs when listened to at high volume. Test out which volume works for you and then lower it a bit. You'll get a few extra songs out of your listening experience. Speaking of volume, the equalizer program built into the iPod uses up power as well; most compressed audio won't benefit from custom settings on the iPod for daily listening, so turn off the equalizer.
Full drains and full charges -
Even though most electronic devices with rechargeable batteries are capable of cutting off charging supply when full, still being connected for extended periods of time to a power supply can mess up the battery's internal chip that determines if the battery displays as full to you the user. It can also rob the battery of power over time as the more cycles a batter gets recharged for, the lesser the amount of time it will function for before needing a recharge. You can extend battery life by charging your iPod only when the battery is completely drained or very low.
Try not to charge your iPod unless it is very low or displaying the low battery icon. If you need to sync or update your iPod, remember that plugging it into your computer also charges it; so try to wait until the next charge to do any updating or syncing. Always fully charge the iPod, don't interrupt the charging cycle if at all possible. Updating also allows Apple to give your iPod's on board computer and battery system the latest tweaks and fixes to get every last bit out of your iPod battery.
Stay cool -
Like most electronic devices, iPods work best in room temperature conditions. Too much heat can damage your iPod, cause it to work harder, and lead to lower battery life. Store your iPod in a cool, dry place and when listening to your iPod in high heat, be sure to keep it out of direct light and only use it for short periods of time.
These tips and tricks will help you optimize the battery life of your iPod and extend the life of the battery. You'll eventually have to have Apple replace your iPod battery but by optimizing battery life in your iPod now you'll be able to delay the inevitable.
