The tiger is majestic animal. Do you know how useful the black and yellow stripes on its body are to it?

How the tiger hunts?

The tiger is the most powerful of all meat eaters and the potential enemy of almost every large animal that dwell in the forest. Yet, in spite of its power, the tiger takes great pains to endure that its hunting trips are successful. This is because its regular prey –deer and other ground-dwelling mammals –are continually on the lookout for danger and run away as soon as they sense its approach.

Tigers usually hunt alone and at night, their striped coats help them to hide in the undergrowth. They are also difficult to hear. Despite their size they treated softly over the forest floor, making barely sounds as they stalk their prey.

When they finally come close enough to attack, they lunge forward for the kill, covering several meters with each bound. If they cannot reach their prey immediately, they may give chase but they usually give up after a few hundred maters.

Large prey such as deer, buffaloes or even young elephants provide enough meat for several meals. Tigers hide their food from other meat eaters in vegetation on the forest floor. Smaller prey, such as monkeys, they eat straight away.

When a tiger has killed a big animal like a Sambhar, it cannot it cannot eat the whole animal at once.

A tigress can have as many as six young ones at a time, which are called cubs. They stay with their mother until they are two years old. She takes care of them and teaches them how to hunt.

The tiger live different parts of Asia and Siberia. The tiger and the lion are the biggest animals in the cat family, and the great Indian tiger is bigger than the lion. A male tiger is about ten feet long. A tiger’s coat is yellow and black. If you think about it, you will soon now why its coat has these colors. The long forest grass dries to a yellow color in summer, and the trees throw dark shadows on the ground. When the tiger moves through the forest and through the long grass to the river bank, its coat is almost the same color as the grass and the shadows around.

The tiger does not like the hot sun. It lies caves, or in the forest until evening, when it comes out to hunt or go down to the river to drink water and to bathe. Sometimes the tiger takes a mud bath in the shallow water at the river’s edge and then rolls on the sand like a playful kitten.

The tiger has strong teeth and claws. When the tiger walks, it pulls its claws in because it wants to keep them sharp. The tiger likes to hunt alone. It can swim well, and run very fast. It can jump up to eighteen feet! But it cannot climb trees.
