Playing cards have been around for a long time and are mostly used in gambling. However, this article is not about gambling. It's about playing cards facts and trivia which you may not know about and need not know about if you want to win at gambling.

The following is a list of 12 playing cards facts and trivia for your entertainment.

  1. Each king in the four suits represents a great king from history. The King of Spades is King David, the King of Clubs is Alexander the Great, the King of Hearts is Charlemagne and the King of Diamonds is Julius Caesar.
  2. Each of the four suit also represents the four major pillars of the economy in the middle ages. Hearts respresents the Church, Spades represents the military, Clubs represents agriculture and Diamonds represents the merchants.
  3. The King of Hearts seems to have a sword sticking through his head. For this reason, he is also known as the Suicide King.
  4. To make sure that a deck of cards is thoroughly and properly mixed, the cards have to be shuffled at least 7 times.
  5. In 1685, the French governor in Canada used playing cards as currency to pay off war debts. This has made playing cards the first paper currency to be used in Canada.
  6. In India, playing cards are round.
  7. The Ace of Spades is the symbol of death.
  8. The Nine of Hearts is the symbol of love.
  9. The first playing cards appear between 1000 to 1400 years ago.
  10. The French introduced the 52 cards pack which are the most commonly used today.
  11. The French gave their cards names. For example, the Queen of Diamonds was called Rachel, Argine was the Queen of Clubs and Hector, the Jack of Diamonds.
  12. In medieval Europe, bookbinders used unwanted papers, including sheets of uncut playing cards, to bind their books.
