After you cough you may have a “whooping” sound when you breathe in. You might vomit for a few seconds after coughing or even stop breathing. There are websites online where you can hear what whooping cough sounds like, simply key in "sound of whooping cough" into your search engine.

WHAT CAUSES WHOOPING COUGH: A germ that is a type of bacteria causes whooping cough. Other people can get the germ from the person with whooping cough, just like the common cold, it is quite contagious. Your can get a shot to help prevent whooping cough.  People of all ages can get whooping cough; however, it is much less likely if they get the new immunization to prevent it. 

PREVENT WHOOPING COUGH: The number one way to prevent getting the disease is to get a shot or immunization for it. Also, be sure to keep your hands very clean by washing and using hand sanitizer often. This can help prevent the spread of the disease.

WHOPPING COUGH WITH INFANTS: Whooping cough can kill infants and should be treated immediately if an infant develops whooping cough. Parents who have infants should get immunized for whooping cough. Also, anyone who is a caregiver for an infant should be immunized. Jennifer Lopez has started a foundation for whooping cough to bring awareness to parents of the importance for them to immunized. It is so important because infants who develop whooping cough can die as a result. This is because they don't have their immunizations to fully protect them yet.
