How to Eat Vegetarian When Traveling
It can be tough to find good vegetarian fare when on the road. Here's how to eat vegetarian eating options when traveling.
If you're a vegetarian who travels frequently, you know how difficult it can be to find healthy vegetarian fare on the road. If you don't have time to stop at a sit down restaurant for a meal, you're going to need some fast vegetarian, healthy alternatives. Here are some ideas for vegetarian eating on the road:
Vegetarian eating options: Grocery store salad bars
Grocery store salad bars can be a quick and healthy vegetarian option for eating well on the road. Many national grocery store chains have on-site salad bars that offer a variety of tasty vegetarian ingredients you can use to create a salad masterpiece. This can also be an economical choice since salad from grocery store salad bars is usually sold by the pound.
Vegetarian eating options: Burger King
If you need a super fast vegetarian option, Burger King has a healthy vegetarian burger on the menu which can be paired with a side salad for a fast and health road meal. Burger King is one of the few fast food restaurants that has a vegetarian sandwich available for eating on the road. Hopefully, other fast food restaurants will take note and expand their options accordingly.
Vegetarian eating options: Natural food markets and co-ops
Most cities have at least one natural food co-op that offers vegetarian fare. Many of these establishments have a small deli or restaurant inside that offers hot food to eat in or to take out. Research these sites before your trip and go prepared with their addresses and phone numbers. One of the best natural food markets for eating on the road is Whole Foods Market. Most of their sites have a hot and cold food bar with loads of healthy vegetarian entrees and salads. If the city you're visiting has one, it can be an excellent solution to eating well on the road.

The Happy Cow website at http://www.happycow.net lists vegetarian and vegan resources including restaurants by locality. Before your trip, spend some time researching the various vegetarian places to eat on the road so you'll be prepared when hunger strikes.
Vegetarian eating options: Bring along your own vegetarian snacks
If you have little time to stop for food, bring along some healthy, vegetarian snacks in a cooler. Some snacks that are healthy and satisfying include hummus or peanut butter with crackers, mixed nuts, raw vegetables to dip into hummus, and healthy cereal bars. These also make a nice travel snacks between meals.
Vegetarian eating options: Ethnic restaurants
Before your trip, research the location of Chinese and Mexican restaurants along your route. These types of restaurants generally offer a selection of vegetarian options. Keep their phone numbers in your travel book so you can call them ahead of time for an order to go.
