Re-Installing Mac Os X when it won't accept your Install Disc - Use a USB boot drive!

Dec 26th, 2008 by TweetBoxLive

Can't get Mac Os X to boot? Install disc won't work? You need to create a USB boot drive and get yourself back up and running. Here's how!

Firstly what's the issue?

The issue being that you can't get Mac Os X to install on your MacBook from the install DVD for whatever reason.

Secondly, what's the answer and what do I need?

You have to create a bootable usb partition on a flash key or hard drive, for which you'll need the install disc and another mac (if you can't restart the one you're trying to update, which is what happened to me).

Thirdly, the steps (I'll take it easy)

  1. Plugin your flash key or hard drive into your currently usable mac machine.
  2. Create a new partition of around 6Gb. (Make sure you have backed up the drive if you already have info on it, as it will get erased.)
  3. Insert your install disc into your superdrive etc.
  4. Start Disk Utility (found in Applications >> Utilities)
  5. Select your chosen drive.
  6. Click on restore.
  7. Drag the install disc from the selections on the left into the Source box.
  8. Drag the flash key or hard drive to the Destination box.
  9. Click on the restore button.
  10. It should take around 30 minutes depending on your mac to create the bootable usb drive.
  11. Once it's done, plug the drive into the offending MacBook.
  12. Restart the MacBook holding down the option button (to the left of the Apple/cmd button).
  13. As it boots up you will see your standard Macintosh HD and you should see your Install USB Drive.
  14. Select the install drive to boot from and follow the install prompts.
  15. Make yourself a coffee and sit back.

Hope this helps anyone with failure to launch syndrome...
