The art of David Cerny is displayed in public areas through out Prague, Czech Republic and tourists can't help but stop and stare. This Prague artist is provocative and his work comments on the Czech society, the countries history, and it's politics. Take a Prague map and wander the streets in search of these unique and interesting sculptures.

On a visit to Prague, Czech Republic you are bound to come across one of David Cerny's works of art in a public area. They are thought provoking and speak volumes about the popular Czech viewpoints.

David Cerny's art is controversial and antiestablishment; every piece makes a statement about freedom of expression. In fact during the communist era he was jailed for painting the Red Armada Tank in Victory square pink! Here are some of his works that you can see in Prague:

  1. Zizkov Television Tower has cast iron figures of babies crawling up it's perpendicular surface. The tower, built in the communist era sticks out like an ugly sore thumb, luckily the "tower Babies" gave comic relief when they were added in 2000. There is a restaurant and observation deck in the tower and it is open 10:00-23:30. Address: Mahlerovy sady 1, Prague 3 – Zizkov. Go by metro or tram11 or 9, to Jiriho z Podebrad stop.
  1. The Hanging Horse can be found close to Wenceslas Square in the Lucerna passage. The horse hangs upside down while a knight rides it sitting on the horses upturned belly. Not far away in the square stands the right-side-up version of Wenceslas riding his horse. Here the artist really turns the rulers on their heads, an ironic stab at the noble class perhaps. The closest metro stop is Nové Město.

3. "The man hanging out" can be seen on Jilska Street in Stare   Mesto, and is a life size sculpture of Sigmund Freud hanging from a metal rod which sticks out from the roof of a building about four stories high. The piece has been on tour to many other countries.

  1. Just outside the Futura gallery at 49 Holeckova, Prague 5, you can see "Brownnosers". Two naked figures, more than 5 meters high, bending over, there faces disappearing into a wall, and a ladder leaning against their legs leading up to their bums. You can climb the ladders and look inside there you will find a film showing two political leaders feeding each other. The work was installed in 2003.
  1. "The two pissing men" two life size bronze figures electronically programmed to turn this way and that as they "write" famous quotes with their stream of pee. They are standing in a bath tub type thing in the shape of the Czech Republic. The art is interactive and you can send an SMS message to a phone number and the men write your message with their stream of pee. To be found at Hergetova Cihelna in Kampa, the piece was established in 2004.

There are many other works of art by Cerny throughout Prague and he also has his own museum called the Meat Factory, where various contempory artists come and work on their projects. I find his work surprising and thought provoking, I'm sure you will too, especially if you come across it by chance in a Prague street.
