This article will let you know what cleaning products are safe for use with a septic tank.

A septic tank is a sewage treatment system located on properties that do not have access to public sewer lines. These tanks break up sewage on site by developing a bacteria within the tank that breaks down sludge as it enters the tank. Certain chemicals found in cleaning products can kill the bacteria that breaks down sludge within a septic tank, while other cleaners are septic tank safe. Read over the following cleaning products to find out what works best when your home has a septic tank.

Safe Household Cleaning Products

Baking soda is a natural household ingredient that works to clean and deodorize septic tanks. Every two weeks, pour one cup of baking soda into the toilet, and flush. This will easily control pH levels as well as any odor that can sometimes emit from the tank.

Liquid dish detergent also works well to clean septic tanks. This works as a degreasing and deodorizing agent, that will safely clean the tank and eliminate any odor, without causing damage. Pour three large squirts of liquid dish detergent down the toilet, and flush. Repeat every two weeks to keep septic tank odor under control.

Borax is another inexpensive cleaning agent that will clean both the toilet and septic tank effectively. Borax can be purchased by the box from your local grocery store, located near the laundry detergents. Every two weeks, pour two cups of borax into the toilet, scrub with a toilet brush, then flush to drain through the septic tank.
