Pumpkin Bread Recipe ~ Grandma's Favorite

Nov 1st, 2009 by InkSpot

One can hardly forget the wonderful aroma of grandma's kitchen the day after Halloween. Pumpkins were recycled, even though the term "recycle" was hardly used in those days, but the none the less, pumpkins were not thrown out or left to rot on the front porch step. Pumpkins were baked into delicious mouth-watering treats.

Grandma's Pumpkin Bread recipe wasn't a big secret, but nobody ever come close to making it just like Grandma...perhaps you want to give it a try.

Pumpkin Bread Recipe Ingredients:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves (Freshly grind whole cloves to a dust-like powder for best flavor)
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup Crisco shortening (You can also use the butter-flavored Crisco)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup fresh, cooked pumpkin
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional, can leave out if you don't like nuts)
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/4 cup shredded carrot

Recipe Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Farenheit.
  2. In a mixer bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, salt, ginger, baking soda and ground cloves. Set this aside for now.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat together brown sugar and shortening until well blended; beat in eggs.
  4. Add pumpkin and milk and mix well.
  5. Add the flour mixture from your other bowl to the pumpkin, sugar mixture and blend well.
  6. Stir in by hand the chopped nuts, raisins and shredded carrot.
  7. Pour batter into a greased 9x5x3-inch loaf pan.
  8. Bake in 350 degree oven for about 55-60 minutes or until a wooden tooth pick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Cool in the loaf pan for about 10 minutes.
  10. Remove from pan onto a wire cooling rack.

You may serve the bread hot, but allow it to cool a bit before slicing it. To store it for later use, wrap the loaf in saran wrap when completely cool and place it in a freezer type zip-lock bag or use sealing bags to remove all air before freezing. You may freeze the Pumpkin Bread in a freezer bag if you desire.

Recipe makes 1 loaf.

This recipe sounds pretty tasty, i’ll have to give it a try.  With walnuts, raisins and carrots it’s one i’ll try and get the kids eating too!
