An Amateur Beer Snob's Guide to Beer: The L Beers
After 12 years of beer tasting, this amateur has plenty to say about beers from across the globe.
What you will find below
The listings below will include the name of the beer, my numerical ranking based upon my own scale of 0.1 to 10.0, and a little of my personal thoughts about each beer.
L beers
3.9
Weak and watery with a touch of carbonation. This Canadian pilsener (as the bottle calls it) has a little sweetness, but that's about all. Not worth drinking on a regular basis because there are better beers at better prices.
Labatt Blue Light
4.1
Has a weak, watered bitter/sweetness similar to most made-for-America light beers. Not as much carbonation as some light beers. Drinkable but that's about it.
Labatt Canadian Ale
5.2
There is a little strength here. Not real watery, but not real carbonated either. A decent beer for beer snob beginners to break their teeth on.
Labatt ICE Beer
3.0
Overly sweet with a roasted taste that is rather annoying. A little carbonation. A little dryness. A little waste of time.
Latrobe American Pale Ale
6.8
Very smooth and wet with a strong bitterness on the way down. Tastes a little like an India pale ale with a hint of sourness.
Latrobe Bavarian Black
6.0
From Latrobe Brewing Co. of Latrobe, Pennsylvania. The bottle says this is a "black" lager, but it has the texture and taste of a maple porter. Not for beginners but nothing extremely exciting in this brew. Worth a taste, but don't add it to your list of regular beers.
Latrobe Bohemian Pilsner
7.4
Has a strong bitterness for a pilsner. More stout than your typical pilsner. Wet with a flat texture faintly similar to a bitter, though stronger.
Leinenkugel's Honey Weiss Bier
5.7
Just the right amount of sweetness with a little fizz. A good thirst quencher. A good wheat beer for just drinking or with sea food.
Leinenkugel'sNorthwoods Lager
4.3
Has a wet, sweet basic lager flavor with a bit of fruity smell. Kind of plain except for the sweetness. Not overly exciting.
Leinenkugel's Red Lager
5.5
If my rankings were based on price and taste and not just taste, this beer would probably rank a 10. This brew costs about the same as Budweiser but is a much better drink. If you are lucky enough to find this beer on tap (like in the Cross Keys tavern of Chillicothe, Ohio) then you are lucky indeed. The taste is a little sweet but not overly so. A good, wet beer with nice coloring, texture and smell.
Leinenkugel's Original Lager
5.9
One of the better mass-marketed lagers in the United States. A good drinking brew for snobs and non-snobs alike. Not sweet. The bitterness isn't overpowering. Just a tad too much carbonation but not enough to hurt the quality.
Liberty Brewing Company Around the Horn
6.2
Tastes like a fairly weak India Pale Ale, but doesn't have the sourness often associated with I.P.A.s. One thing I've noticed about the beers from this brewpub is they don't necessarily taste like what they're supposed to taste like; often, many of the brews tasted like a lager of one strength or another.
Liberty Brewing Company Dragonslayer
5.2
Pretty wet and non-sweet for a Scottish ale, which isn't necessarily bad. Kind of tastes like a weak lager, but very drinkable. The Liberty Brewing Company is a brewpub in Akron, Ohio, so drop on in if you get the chance.
Liberty Brewing Company Mad Cow Milk Stout
7.1
A little weak for a stout, but not bad. Has a decent, burnt quality.
Liberty Brewing Company Paul Bunyan
6.5
A little sugary and a little fizzy. A little strength here, too. Everything about this beer is little (except the mug it came in).
Liberty Brewing Company Sir Winston
6.5
This English pale ale tastes more like a medium lager than a pale ale, but still worth drinking. A good, strong bitterness as you swallow.
Liberty Brewing Company White Lace Wheat
5.2
Nice head. Fairly weak, even for a hefe-weiss. Non-beer tasters would probably like this, while real snobs can enjoy it for drinking.
Liftbridge Amber Lager
7.6
This beer instantly assaults you with a strong amber/caramel taste with just a hint of sweetness. Goes down smooth and frothy. Made by the fine folks of Liftbridge Brewing Co. in Ashtabula, Ohio.
Light Rail Ale
5.9
This is actually a pale ale from Broadway BrewingLLC and Wynkoop Brewing Companyin Denver, Colorado. This is worth tasting if you are ever in Denver. The taste is a bit strong for a pale ale, but still smooth enough for such a beer - keep in mind I'm more than half-toasted and listening to Metallica while writing this. Just kidding. Maybe.
Lindemans Framboise Lambic
9.8
A Belgian lambic made with raspberries. The taste isn't as powerful here as in the Kriek (cherry) version, but the smell is quite a bit more powerful. Has a strong sweet, fruity berry flavor. Tastes more like a good red wine than a type of beer. One of the best beers on the planet.
Lindemans Kriek Lambic
9.8
This Belgian brew tastes more like a fine fruity seltzer water than it does a beer. This lambic is made with fresh cherry juice and you can definitely taste it. Very expensive but worth the price for special occasions. One of the most unique beers in the world. You haven't lived until you've tried this stuff. Great!
Little Kings Cream Ale
3.1
Schoenling Brewing Company out of Cincinnati, Ohio, makes this stuff in the little green bottles. Not as bad as I expected, but not all that great either. Weak and watery like so many American beers. Probably a good beer for just drinking. The 7 ounce (207 ml) bottles are kind of cute and easy to finish off.
3.0
Tastes just like Budweiser except it doesn't have as much fizz, so there's no reason to spend a lot of time looking for this beer. Brewed by the Lone Star Brewing Company in Longview, Texas. This beer is very smooth, so I could see how it might go over big in hot country like Texas.
Louie's Evil Lager
6.2
Saloon Brewing Company of New Ulm, Minnesota, puts out this beer. The label is most interesting with a picture of a devil or demon pouring himself a brew from a barrel. This is a bitter beer with no sweetness at first, but by the third bottle it's pretty sweet. The bitterness doesn't make this drink overly stoutish. It's wet and smooth. For those who need to know, a lager is a beer usually stored a couple of months in cold temperatures for the aging process; lagers are normally less hoppy and carbonated than some beers and are bottom-fermented.
Lowenbrau Dark
4.9
The people at Miller brew this in the United States with permission from Lowenbrau. This is pretty weak for a dark beer. There is a little of the expected burnt taste, but not much. For the price, you can do better.
Lowenbrau Special
4.7
Wet and very made-for-America tasting. In the United States, this beer is brewed by Miller with permission from Lowenbrau.
