It is easy to gain weight, but losing weight is a Herculean task. We never know we have gained so much weight until we find that one of our favorite dresses does not fit. There is an easy way to reduce or lose weight. How? Research has proved that consuming green tea helps in losing weight. Let me give a brief history about green tea before telling its benefits in losing weight.

Green tea has been in use by Asians some 4,000 years back. Those days, green tea was not considered a beverage, but as a herbal medicine. They used green tea for curing headaches, reducing weight, curing depressions, etc. This is why research was made on green tea to know what ingredients are present in it and whether this can be consumed as a beverage. Green tea contains lots of antioxidants and this is one of the main reasons why green tea helps in weight loss. American scientists conducted research on green tea and have concluded that green tea definitely helps in reducing weight.

All of you must have heard about the famous researcher, D. Abdul Dulloo. He once said in that to lose weight one has to either reduce or trim down energy consumption or has to increase or boost the level of energy spent. One way to lose weight is to increase the metabolism rate and green tea helps in doing so.

How was the research done to conclude that green tea really helps in reducing weight? Researchers experimented green tea on ten healthy people. They put them on a Western diet that comprises of fat, proteins and carbohydrates. From this experiment, researchers found that green tea has caffeine as one of its ingredients and this contributed in losing weight. These scientists calculated the energy spent by these ten healthy people three times a day and took note of how much calories they have spent.

With this experiment they found that people who consumed green tea were able to spend more calories or energy than those who did not consume green tea even though they were given other beverages that had caffeine in them. Green tea has a component called catechin polyphenol and this helps in reducing weight. These help in changing the way norepinephrine hormone works and increases the rate of metabolism. When metabolism increases naturally there is a decrease in weight.

Let me conclude by highlighting the important benefits of green tea in weight loss. They are:

  1. Contains lots of antioxidants
  2. Increases metabolism rate
  3. Contains catechin polyphenol that changes the way norepinephrine hormone works.
