Most injuries to eyes are caused during sports activities. Everyone should try to protect your eyes when participating in a sport especially a high impact sport. Most children do not wear eye protection during sports. More than 4 times an hour on average a person is seen in an emergency room because of a sports related eye injury.

Many of these injuries can be prevented with the use of eye protection. There are a few things you should do to choose sports eye protection. The steps below will guide you through this process.

Instructions

The first thing you should do is determine what type of sports eye protection you will need. For most sports you will need the highest safety rating of F803. This rating is given by the American Society for Testing Materials and is the impact resistance rating. While in the field during base ball, playing basketball, field hockey, racquet ball, soccer and volley ball you should wear glassed with the rating of F803. Sports requiring a helmet should have an eye shield that is mounted to the helmet, these sports include foot ball and base ball when running bases.

Next if your sport is outside you will need to select UVA & UVB protection. 100 % protection is recommended for outdoor sports. If you use sports glasses for both indoor and outdoor activities or have changing lighting conditions you can select glasses with photochromic (lenses that change color) or tinted lenses.

It is good to add an anti reflective coating for both indoor and outdoor sports. This will help reduce glare that most glasses cause

Lastly you should select a sports band for the glasses. Most sports require a lot of body movement and can cause your glasses to shake around and possible fall. A good quality sports band on your glasses will eliminate that problem and leave both of your hands free to participate in that sport.

Tips & Warnings
  • Regular eye wear can actually cause more injury to people than not wearing glasses at all.
  • When selecting sports eye protection you should consider the ASTM rating for the sport that will be played.
