Can Ring of Honor Survive With a TV Deal in Place
Ring of Honor is the number three promotion in the United States with a TV deal in place behind WWE and TNA. Can they survive being in that same position ECW was in during the first Monday Night Wars between WWE and WCW?
Can the wrestling company known as Ring of Honor be able to survive having a television deal? With having it, by default that puts the company as the third largest promotion in the United States. Currently, the promotion is on a network called HDNet. It is a channel that is not that well-known but a start for the company in terms of getting national exposure. Perhaps they could do what ECW was unable to do many years back and that is survive with the deal.
It could be considered what ECW was year’s back, a place where if a wrestler didn’t make it in WWE or TNA, this would be the next option to consider. Notable talent that has come from the company to work in either WWE or TNA full-time and have been the most successful have been CM Punk with WWE and Samoa Joe in TNA. Recently, top wrestlers Bryan Danielson and Nigel McGuiness are going to be joining up with the WWE. Both men are former Ring of Honor World Champions.
In regards to the idea of some wrestlers being used as a way to get noticed by them, that is another story for another time. Before getting the TV deal, it should be noted that the company did have a PPV deal getting some exposure to more than just the fan base it had been growing overtime. Instead of trying to get former WCW, ECW, WWE, TNA, or even former wrestling fans to watch, they realized that they needed to build a fan base and be different than others. It was more about forming a Ring of Honor fan base.
With the ECW Company folded, it seemed like this company would fill that void and be a bit of a cult classic. Granted, this does not mean it is the next ECW but could become that promotion that could find a fan base that isn’t satisfied with what the WWE is putting out or TNA for that matter. One of the main differences is that the channel HDNet is not one that everyone has and would need to be ordered. As stated, this could be the beginning of hopefully getting a new TV deal if it proves to become a major promotion in the industry.
There are benefits to the idea of another company in that there are more options for fans in general to watch. Say you don’t want to watch WWE or TNA, there is this option. Of course, with technology evolving and having items like DVR, it can be recorded and you can all watch three by simply recording it and watching it whenever you please.
It would be nice if it could last a good while. It began in 2002 and still running to this very day. Maybe one day it can be looked upon as the third company and could move up in time. May they finally get an upgrade TV deal for a channel that everyone has like TNT, TBS, or even FX would be nice. Ring of Honor has potential but only time will tell if it can last.
