How to Wire a New Digital Programmable Thermostat

This article will explain how to wire a new digital programmable thermostat; whether you are replacing an old thermostat or wiring one for the first time. If you don’t have central air conditioning, you can still use these instructions to wire your new digital programmable thermostat to control your heating.

STEP 1:

Always read the manufactures’ instructions before installing your new thermostat. Digital programmable thermostats may vary between manufactures.

STEP 2:

Turn off the power to you central air conditioning and heating system. The power switch is usually located on the unit or close by.

STEP 3:

Remover the cover off the old thermostat, this will expose the thermostat base and the electrical wires. Tag each wire with the letter of the terminal it’s connected to before removing them; this will help you when connecting the wires to your new thermostat.

STEP 4:

Remove the screws that hold the thermostat's base to the wall and carefully remove the base. Make sure the wires do not slip into the wall.

STEP 5:

Pull the wires through the hole of the new thermostat base and position the base on the wall so its level. Mark the position of the mounting holes with a pencil so that they can be drilled. Secure the base onto the wall using mounting screws and plastic anchor inserts.

STEP 6:

Most thermostats will have the same letter terminals as the old one. If this is the case reconnect the wires to the same terminals as the old thermostat. If the new thermostat has different letter terminals then refer to the manufacture’s wiring guide for the correct wiring.

STEP 7:

When the wiring is complete insert the battery and connect the thermostat to the base.

STEP 8:

Turn all power back on. Place the thermostat in “AUTO” position and raise the temperature to above the room temperature to make sure the furnace turns on.

STEP 9:

Program the digital thermostat by reading the manufactures User Guide.
