Why you should give two weeks notice

It is not only common courtesy to give two weeks notice when quitting a job, but it is also considered a responsible and professional gesture that has benefits for both the employee and the employer. Not doing so is a sure way to not only affect your reputation but also a sure fire way to eliminate a potential reference later down the line.

For the employer giving two weeks notice allows them to begin the search to find someone to take over your roles and responsibilities on the job. For shift work it is even more beneficial to them, because an employee who suddenly quits with no notice leaves a huge hole in the job schedule and work routine.

But you may be asking yourself: "Why should I care if the employer whom I hate, despise, no longer like working for is stuck high and dry?". Well for the employee planning to quit a job, two weeks notice rewards them as well. It is never a good thing professionally or personally to leave a business relationship or otherwise on bad terms.

Giving two weeks notice shows the employer that you are responsible, considerate, and also minimizes the appearance that you dislike the employer or the job. By giving two weeks notice you are avoiding uncomfortable confrontations and problems and can give a reason such as better pay, personal problems, or career advancement for your reason for leaving.

On the other hand if you just up and walk out one day or fail to show up to work your giving the impression that you are a bad employee. When your time comes to have job interviews down the line and a new employer wants to contact a previous employer you'll have a potentially unwanted negative reference telling your potential new boss how your a quitter and an inconsiderate one at that. By just walking out you eliminate any positive feelings the employer has about you and with it any positive source of references, recommendations, or connections.

Remember, even if you can't stand your job, it is only two more weeks. Failing to give notice can not only ruin your job chances later down the line it can ruin your reputation.
