How to Be a Better Flyer - Cheerleading

You made the team! Congratulations! Now...are you looking for a quick refresher before practice starts? Before a competition? Are you new to it all? Use these tips to become a great flyer!

Step 1

If you step into a stunt, make sure that you load in with your free foot high enough for the base to catch it. If they have to drop too low to catch your foot, your feet will be uneven and the stunt can potentially come crashing down. That is, IF they catch your foot in the first place...

Step 2

Lock your knees and keep your hip in (don't drop your hip)! It will be significantly harder to keep your balance if you're thrown off.

Step 3

Is one foot higher than the other because the bases are uneven? In competition, there's not too much you can do about it; but in practice, slap the leg that is higher, and your base will know to get slightly lower. They should be able to judge when they are even. You CAN do this in competition, but preferably you won't have to.

Step 4

When cradling, make sure you are in the correct position! And of all things to do, DON'T flail your arms around; you'll only knock your bases to the ground and end up flat on the mat! If you are doing a twist cradle, don't try and twist yourself; that's the bases' job, and you will only hinder them. Try to keep in tight, which includes keeping your legs tightly crossed (instead of flying haphazardly through the air).

Step 5

Smile, smile, and smile! No matter what happens, keep on smiling! If you do, people will tend to pay less attention to any other mistakes, and it makes you look great anyways!

Good luck as a flyer!
