Cat Craziness

As a long time owner of six cats, I think that taking care of cats and keeping them entertained can be difficult by rewarding.

People have said that I am crazy because I have owned six cats, unfortunately I am now down to four. I don't think I was crazy, I think that I am just caring. Having so many cats is taxing, especially when one must keep them vaccinated, and taken to regular check-ups and it can get expensive, but if you budget correctly and space them apart it really isn't that bad.

The worst thing that I have found about having so many cats, is that you must change the litter box on a daily basis (that is if you can't stand the smell.) Six cats can go through litter, food, and water quickly. They also can get rather rambunctious while playing with one another. It takes a special kind of person to have so many animals, but it is rewarding when you can see that all of them are so happy to be with you.

When I first moved out of my parents home, I thought that I would only have two cats ever. After my husbands and my first cat died, we decided to go to the local animal shelter and adopt a kitty for our other one to have someone to play with. As we arrived and asked to see the kitties, we were told that it was if we adopted one we could adopt another for free. How could anyone pass this up? We were helping two poor souls out that had no idea why they were caged which then gave us three cats. Three cats aren't too difficult to take care of. They are fun and pretty much can entertain themselves.

We moved into our second apartment and was walking the mall right across the street about six months later and came across a very cute and playful kitten. I am proud to say that we didnt adopt the cat right away. We went home and talked about 'him' for four days before we went back. The cat was still there so we decided to adopt 'him' or what we thought was a him. The cat was only about a month old but it was a female but we didnt care. We have to have this cat that looked like a chipmunk only with reverse colors. That made our count at four.

It wasn't until we bought a house and was moving in for the first time did we get the other two cats, making our count at six and our household noisy and a little hectic. I entirely blame my sister for these two cats. She came over and showed me the two cats, one a pure bred siamese and the other a half-breed siamese and they looked so pitiful. I asked some questions about them and found out that they had been severly abused and that she had taken action into her own hands and had rescued them from the household. One of the cats had her teeth kicked in and a broken chestbone where as the other cat had been directly maced in the face who now has breathing issues. I just couldn't say no to them and the next day immediately took them to the vet and got them healthy over a period of a couple months.

So that is my cat craziness story and I advise those who like a quiet and non messy household to never have so many cats. They can be difficult to deal with, especially those from an abused home for just like children they act out. Having six cats is only meant for a special kind of person who is willing to care extensively for them on a daily basis. Cats are not as independent as everyone says they are.

I think that you are one caring lady... and my hat is off to you. I'm presently pet-less but who knows, the minute we settle into our new home... we have just moved to a new country and a new house... I just might find myself a cat. :)
