Clean Liquid Stains from Carpet

Had a recent party where a guest splattered that great berber in the sun room? Kids get a little too frisky with the chocolate fondue? Not to worry! Here you'll find out how to quickly and easily remove an unset liquid stain from carpet — even barbecue sauce from white shag!

As soon as you notice the unset liquid stain on your carpet, quickly gather the following:

• clean room temperature water

• your bare hands

• a vacuum cleaner or carpet sweeper

• a fan (optional)

• calm and patience

Before touching or attempting to scrub or clean any unset liquid stain — even thick barbecue sauce on a white shag rug — simply flood the stain with a generous amount of room temperature water. Give the water anywhere from 5 to 20 seconds to fully penetrate the liquid stain.

Gently push the water back and forth through the stained area with your fingers until the stain color begins to dilute and dissipate. If all of the stain color does not dilute or dissipate, add still more clean water and repeat your back-and-forth finger action through the stained area.

After the water has completely dried, simply vacuum or sweep the area to reveal your newly clean carpet. Use a fan to gently assist in drying the water from the carpet if necessary. If any trace of the stain still remains, begin again with more room temperature water and repeat the entire flood fingers dry vacuum process again. Avoid using hot water at all costs, as it may set stains of particular composition.

For dry or set stains, refer to my other helpful article, How to Remove Set Stains from Carpet. For stain traces that remain after you've tried either or both methods, or for any stains on expensive or exotic materials, you'd do better to consult a reputable local dry cleaner, spot cleaner or rug cleaning contractor.
