Blisters can be extremely irritating and also worsen if not properly cared for. An open blister wound leaves it vulnerable to infection but there are a few simple things you can do to protect and help your blister heal.

The first thing to do when you notice a blister forming is to remove your shoes and socks as the continued friction will only irritate and deepen the blister. Dry your feet off and if the blister is an open wound apply some antibiotic cream.

Be sure to first gently clean the open blister with warm water to remove and debris. If the blister is not open it is still a good idea to run some warm water over the blister but antibacterial is optional if it is not open.

Next make sure the area on and around the blister is dry. Once dry you can apply a variety of coverings for it such as bandaids and moleskin. Personally I go with bandaids because the firmly attach to your skin and cover the blister.

Just be sure the bandaid's cushion is on the blister and not the adhesive part. Using gauze is also ok however some gauze may stick in open wounds causing more pain and irritation.

In order to help your blister heal it is a good idea to remove any wound dressings when you are relaxing or going to sleep. This will help the skin naturally heal the blister as the main purpose of the dressings is to protect the blister from friction due to walking/hiking/running. Doing this with an open blister should also include applying antibiotic cream.
