For Today College graduates life are college can be fraught with a lot of uncertainties and disappointments especially in this life of job losses and economic recession. Here are a few tips to help you prepare for the realities of the new world of work

Preparation

Johnny Carson said “Talent alone won't make you a success. Neither will being in the right place at the right time, unless you are ready. The most important question is: 'are your ready?’ It takes a prepared person to spot and maximize opportunities.

Gather information, Process information, Build broad based knowledge

The days of I studied English in school and know nothing about finance or management or marketing or science is gone. Build you’re thinking through the regular gathering and processing of information. Use information to stretch your thinking and expand your imagination.

Take a Risk, Become an entrepreneur (launch/start something)

To key to becoming an entrepreneur is finding a problem and pouring your heart into solving it. Launch a business, a non-profit, a community group, a blog, a website….start something no matter how small. There is no job security any more…the only way to keep your self in is to continually stay ahead and be relevant. In doing so you will build critical experience required for the workplace.

Network, build relationships

The single biggest thing that I have learned is that relationships matter. People like to work with people they trust, relationships open doors, network and connect with people who will add value to your dreams and aspirations. People who will challenge your thinking and mentor you

Look at for new industries and emerging hot spots and opportunities

The Environment, public health, social enterprise and non-profit, digital media and internet services, risk management, private equity, hedge funds, venture capital Alternative energy technologies, web communities, nuclear science, space science
