Appreciating Mother Nature

When life comes at you fast, way too fast, It's time to slowly return to the speed of quiet. If possible, go to the shore. If you are lucky to live along the Florida Gulf Coast, or anywhere that has miles of public beach, you can spend the day gathering shells. If you go at low tide, you'll have a better chance of finding large, gleaming shells that haven't broken up on the surf or pecked on by seagulls. Especially after a storm, you may find crabshells, starfish, or some bottom coral.

If the seashore is not an option, any lake or river will do. Sit by the shore, and let the rhythm of the waves lull you into quietness. Taking deep breaths will make it happen sooner. Just think how long this water full of life has been there, millions of years perhaps, and it will still be there long after you are gone.

If the water is clear, you might see some life there. Be still and watch for reflections on the surface. Groups of little fish scurrying about, a turtle, water bugs, a crab, whatever. Try to figure out what makes them tick. Are they aware that you are watching them? How did they evolve, how did they get there? Casting a sharp eye along the shore, you might find bones, tracks, burrows, or other clues. If you have a state or city park nearby, maybe there is a pond where all the water birds gather. Be careful about feeding them anything, as this is prohibited in some areas.

Behind my building is a lake inhabited by ducks, wood storks, egrets, herons, and many turtles. Sometimes a hawk, a turkey vulture, or a rare eagle will drop in.

Whenever you are feeling stressed out, or down and out, just remember Mother Nature. She is always around and always putting on a show. Let her entertain you.
