Below are the most important questions about snoring that most people want answers to.

Q. What is snoring?

Snoring is the sound made when a person is sleeping produced by the air moving through a blocked airway passage that causes the vibration of the soft palate and the uvula. Men, women, children and even animals are known to snore. The sound can be soft and gentle or can be as loud as a freight train. How loud the sound of one’s snore depends largely on the person and the causes of the snoring.

Q. What are the causes of snoring?

There are many causes of snoring. And the causes of the snoring will determine the effective treatment for preventing and stopping the snoring.

When we are awake, our muscles keep our body going. But when we sleep, our muscles start to relax. And when the muscles in the internal parts of our mouth start to relax, the tongue might block the air passage to our lungs. This blockage causes the soft palate and the uvula to vibrate when the air moves in and out while breathing and so one starts to snore.

Another cause of snoring could be because of a nasal blockage as when one has the flu or a cold. The existence of allergens like dust, pet’s hair or cigarette smoke could also result in a nasal blockage if one has a sinus problem.

Q. Does snoring affect anyone other than the snorer?

The snorer may not be aware of his snoring problem. There is a joke about snoring. It is what you find out once you’re married. Snoring affects everyone especially the one who shares the same bed with the snorer. If your partner snores, make sure you sleep first before he/she does or you’ll have a sleepless night. The lack of sleep will cause anger and irritability in others. So snoring does affect other people other than the snorer.

Q. Is there a cure for snoring?

Like other sleeping disorders, scientists and product developers have come out with many cures, remedies and products for snoring. You can choose whether to stop snoring naturally by changing your sleeping position, losing weight, getting rid of allergens and many others. You can also choose from a wide variety of products available in the market from a nasal strip to a mouth guard and nasal spray. As a last resort and only if your snoring is severe, you may want to opt for surgery if that is what your doctor recommends.
