A look at some reasons why snakes aren't just creepy critters, they also make great pets.

Snakes are certainly not thought of as good pets by everyone. In fact, many people are terrified of them; some people will not even enter a room if a snake is being kept in it. Snakes have earned a bad reputation for many reasons and it is hard for these animals to find loving homes. It takes a relatively rare kind of animal lover to keep and care for one of these creepy, crawly animals, but when someone does, they will tell you that their snake is a good pet.

The best thing about keeping a snake as a pet is that you can go on short vacations without having to find a pet sitter, if you plan properly. Make sure your pet’s cage is clean and has fresh material at the bottom (such as fake grass, wood chips, newspaper etc.). Snakes can go for longer periods of time without food than your average pet. The only problem is fresh water. If your pet has a large enough cage, you can place a water dispenser in there for them, if not, you may need a sitter.

Snakes don’t need an awful lot of attention from their owners beyond basic care. They are perfect as a pet for people who work long shifts or just don’t have the energy for an attention hungry pet. They can be fun to handle and give, attention to when you have the time, but they do not need this attention to thrive, at all. They only need to be fed about every 1-2 weeks and require no snacks. Their cages need to be cleaned about as often as they are fed or as needed. Cleaning out the water bowl and providing clean, fresh water is the only thing that a snake requires daily.

Snakes do make interesting pets and chances are that guests in your house will want to talk about this pet, whether they love them or hate them. Snakes are interesting topic of conversation because so many people are scared or them, even though most pet snakes are virtually harmless to humans. If you are a snake lover and keep one as a pet, you may be able to show someone that they have nothing to fear. You may even be able to spread awareness about the misconceptions concerning the dangers of snakes. Of course, there are snakes that are dangerous, but perhaps we should leave the care of those animals up to professionals and keep them out of our homes.

Lastly, we should mention the cool factor of keeping a snake as a pet. These animals are not your everyday pet and they can be very fun to keep. If you like snakes, having one slither around your arm or raise their little head and wave it back and forth at you can be a very neat experience. So, if you are thinking about getting a pet that is a little . . . different, why not try a snake?
