If those ceramic Jack-0-Lanterns aren't quite up to snuff in your household, head out to the pumpkin patch and grab a real pumpkin. I'm going to show you how to carve it without losing a finger!

Carving pumpkins have always fascinated me, but they scare me just a little bit too. It's the knives that do the actual scaring!! If someone is going to cut themselves, it's going to be me! So, this particular article is as much for me as it is for you. No wait, that didn't come out right. I want to save a few fingers out there so I'm hoping that this can help you too! So lets get down to it.

*Prepare your work surface. Choose a large garbage bag or newspaper covered area. Now wash and dry your hands thoroughly before beginning!

*Take a marker and draw the face on the pumpkin. This will give you a pattern to follow!

*Apparently there are specifically designed knives to use for carving pumpkins. Don't grab the closest knife handy and hope that it will be safe and easy, just because it is familiar!

*This is an obvious one, but don't let the kids carve the pumpkin. If they want to participate, let them paint  the faces onto the pumpkins. They can also participate in the scooping out the innerds of the pumpkin.

*Carve slowly and do not carve toward yourself. Think of it as an on-going process. And you do want a masterpiece when you are done, so don't rush it! That's exactly the time when knives will slip and blood will flow. I know that Halloween is supposed to be spooky, but personally, I can do without the blood!

*Choose a fat white candle to illuminate your Jack-o-lantern. I've tried other colors, but this seems to give the best glow!

That should be about it. Take your Jack-0-Lantern out to the porch and give it a home. Now, have fun and enjoy your Halloween!
