How be successful in Sales
Are you looking to increase your income as a salesperson ? or are you looking for a better way to make more money ? or are you just wondering what’s the big deal about sales ? if so, then this article is for you.
First let me start by giving you my explanation of what sales actually is, the best explanation of selling that I have is that selling is the art of effectively reaching a win/win situation where a product or service is given to a egar , willing or interested buyer at a price that is fair or reasonable to the buyer because of the expected value or benefit that they will be able to receive.
For the purposes of this articles I include persuasion and influence as two key ingredients to effective selling (and they will be covered in full detail in future articles).
This form of selling is best achieved by first having a product or a service that will satisfy a current or future need for a group of people of course the larger the group of people that you can target, the better. Then you need to have a cost effective way of reaching that group of people and informing them about your product or services in such a way that will allow them to see the benefits and value of your product or service. Now you’ll want to maximize your efforts by convincing as many qualified prospects as possible that your product or service is the right thing for them to buy from you and at the price that it is being offered at.
Now, I am fully aware that there are people that make a lot of money by through manipulation which is basically high pressure, scare attics or by just plain lying about the potential benefits of the product or services but that is not the way that I believe a person can create a long term, successful, happy and profitable life as an effective salesperson.
Selling is a skill and an ability that we all have (to some degree or another) and it is a skill that we can all benefit from if we choose too. By increasing our natural abilities in this area of our lives we can greatly improve the quality of life for ourselves and for others. Even if you don’t consider your self as having any sales abilities at all, you really do because you have sold yourself on the idea that you can’t sell.
To become more successful and very profitable by increasing your sells abilities you first have to sell yourself on the idea (create the belief) that you can increase and improve your current level of sells skills and abilities and that the benefits of doing so will far out way the cost (time and effort that you will have to devote to learning and improving to doing so). If that’s not done, then a person won’t put forth the effort to make improvements or progress in the area of sells and they won’t get the rewards that can be achieved from being good at selling.
Usually when a person hates sells and doesn’t want anything to do with sales that is a person that may have had a bad experience in sells and has not chosen to increase or further develop their natural born sales abilities.
Learning and increasing your current skill level of selling is really not that difficult especially if you’ve already been successful at improving on any of your other natural born abilities (like the ability to learn how to walk, speak, read, write etc...) and the benefits and rewards make it well worth it.
Sales is probably one of the very best skills to have and to master if you want to create, run or have your own business or if you just want to be successful working for someone else, the reason for this is because you have to successfully sell yourself to the people that you will need to do business with and that could be your future employer, your prospective business partner(or your potential customers or audience).
Think of any successful person, past or present and if you examine their career in detail you will see that one of their key’s to success is that they have the ability to influence, persuade or sell themselves or sell there ideas to others.
The ability to effectively sell is not the end all skill that is needed to be successful in your endeavors but it is one of the many skills needed and the sooner and better you develop and master this key skill the further and faster your progress to success will be.
To be successful in the business world of sales no matter what level of sales you are pursuing you have to master 3 key area’s of focus that will greatly contribute to your future level or success.
The 3 key area’s of focus are your mentally, physically and emotionally states of being.
By controlling and focusing on these three area’s on a daily consistent basis you can insure that you continue to learn, grow, develop and increase your skills and as a result increase you effectiveness as a sales person ( oh yeah and also as a result you will also increase your income : - )
Steps for preparing mentally to be successful in sales include the following
You have to be intensely motivated and determined to succeed in sales and you must have strong compelling goals that you are committed to achieving (goals like improving the quality of your life, having the things that will make your life more enjoyable).
1.) You have to know your product well enough to explain it’s benefits (because that answers the unasked question in your prospects mind of “why should I listen to you ?” ) and you must also know and be able to clearly and persuasively explain to your prospect how to correctly use the product to get the best results. you will also need to know the difference between a good prospect ( someone who has a genuine need for your product or service and the ability to purchase your product or service and receive an excess of benefit, in relation to the cost of the product) and a poor prospect(someone that would not benefit from your product or service even if you gave it to them for free because they really don’t have any need or use for it at all either now or in the for seeable future).
2.) Being mentally prepared also includes being well rested by getting a good nights sleep so that you are ready for the mental work that the task of selling will require. This is one key difference that separates successful sales people from beginning sales people and more well established sales professionals.
3.) Warmed up and ready to perform, which is best done by reviewing and practicing your sales pitch, not just so that you know it, but so that you elevate your confidence and vocal level of authority with it while at the same time this will help to warm up your speaking voice. Another key factor of successful sales people is their developed habit of mentally visualizing (seeing ) yourself giving your pitch successfully to your prospect in such a way that they are impressed with you and in full agreement with what you are saying and pleased to except your offer and do business with you.
4.) you also have to become very knowledgeable about the sells industry and effective sells as well persuasion technics and practices because just like you would not want to talk with or do business with a doctor who didn’t take the time to learn and master his craft no one wants to do business with a sales person that doesn’t know how to properly greet people, show an interest in them, correctly identify their need or problem and then effectively provide them with a product or service that will be of great benefit to them at a reasonable price.
Increasing your knowledge can easily be done by committing to the daily habit of learning more and more about sales by reading books, listening to tape and attending seminars or watching dvd’ or video’s on selling.
Physically being prepare includes the following things
1.) being well nourished and not distracted by hunger.
2.) being or getting in the best shape possible for your current health level, that means doing the right things on a consistent basis things like improving your eating habits, developing or improving your exercise habits and keeping your body well hydrated and having good daily elimination so that you aren’t caring excess waste with you throughout the day.
3.) being ready for a long or physically demanding or engaging day by exercising or warming up before you begin your selling activities.
Emotional preparation means thinking of the big picture (which can include how much financial success you can have and enjoy as a result of creating so much success for others through the benefits and use of your product or service) and you also need to think about the benefits that will become yours as a result of mastering the art of selling
and becoming a bigger and better person as well as an effective problem solver.
by thinking about the benefits of achieving your goals you will buildup a positive mental attitude which is essential to success in every long term endeavor but especially in the field of sales. The reason it is so important in the field of sells is because of the high level of rejection that you will have to overcome to be successful in sales and to overcome a high level of rejection you must have a high level of motivation and determination.
You also have to be committed to the pursuit of your goals (which is to reach the right person at the right time and in the right way) and be prepared to work through the people that don’t have a need for your product or service.
By following the advice that you have just read through I have no doubt that you will be able to dramatically increase your sales results over time as a result of your consistent and persistent effort to increase your knowledge, skills and abilities to learn and master the art of selling.
