Don't be cookie cutter when it comes to dorm room decor. Make your own!
Spending a lot on college dorm room decor for your new digs is a waste of money. You live in the room for about only 8 months, and the tight quarters mean most of your belongings will end up broken or mangled by the end of the year. Become a do it yourselfer in the dorms and create cheap and easy decor.

Step 1

Coordinate with your roommate if you have one. The two of you could create dorm room decorations together.

Also, don't forget to check with your school to see what sorts of items are banned in the dorms.

Step 2

Think about the overall theme or vibe you'd like to set for your room and gain inspiration from that theme or just general feeling you'd like to create.

For example, if you and your roommate are both into fashion design, you could rip pictures out of fashion magazines and throw them into cheap frames to hang around the room.

Step 3

Look through thrift stores for hidden gems you can transform. A coat of bright paint might make for a cool chair.

Step 4

Remember, most of your new creations will only be in use for a year so feel free to let loose and really be creative. Step outside of your boundaries. If you've never been a photographer, try taking some creative shots.

College is all about exploration and is really the time to unleash are creative sides, so get moving!

Look at apartment decoration Web sites online for great ideas for small spaces. I included a link to a one blog in the resources below.

Remember to leave the valuables and heirlooms at home. Dorm rooms are cramped and crowded.
