How to Market a Magic Show
So you have a great magic show and you want to sell it to the public. How do you get your name "out there"? You want people to know that you are a magician with a great show and you want them to hire you for their event.
Whether you are just starting out in the business or even if you are a seasoned professional you will want to work on the following elements of your marketing campaign. The three basic elements towards which you should direct most of your efforts are:
1. Promotional material - Most importantly, a web presence. Your own "dot com" is absolutely essential if you want to rise above the senior citizen and children's birthday party market. A website is today's equivalent of a "promotional package". A professional looking video is a must for your website. It allows you to showcase your talents and achievements for your prospective clients. If you don't have the necessary skills to build and maintain a website there are inexpensive places on the net where you can get a free website with an online page builder. Most of these sites require you to have their advertising on your pages in exchange for the free website hosting. One other necessary promotional piece will be your business card.
2. Paid advertising - Your basic piece of advertising will be your ad in the "Yellow Pages". They usually give you two listings for the basic fee. You should put your main listing under the heading of "Entertainers" and your second listing under the heading of "Magicians". You should list your business and website in "online business directories". These listings can lead to shows very directly and the back links will help Google find your own website much easier.
3. Public appearances - In every show you do you should mention your name and website as often as is tolerable by your audience. Don't overdo it. Hand out your business cards after the show to those whom are interested. Ask your client for a reference and a quote for your website. A good way to get exposure and a very good way to gain confidence and experience is to do shows for senior citizen groups. It's a simple matter of writing a letter offering your services and mail it to every senior citizen group in your area. Offer to work for their honorarium. Never do a show for free unless you feel you need to for your own sake. It goes without saying that if you are going to tell the world that you have a great show you absolutely MUST have a great show. There are many online sources for tips on how to put your show together.
With these elements in place you can watch your magic business grow.
