Fort Wilderness Campground Disney World in Orlando, FL: My Tips
If you are planning a trip to Disney World in Orlando, FL anytime soon and the Fort Wilderness Campground is something you are considering, then you are in luck.
So the family and recently went to Disneyworld in Orlando, FL for a long weekend vacation. We stated at the Fort Wilderness Campground in one of the cabins. This is the fourth time I personally had been to Disneyworld whereas my wife and her family had been there more than a dozen times.
I have to say the cabins were nice. It is what I expected being that it was a cabin and you were supposed to feel like you were camping. So in other words if you some dirt on the floors or a cobweb or two do not panic, it's not that big of a deal.
One thing I strongly recommend is spending a day just enjoying the campground. There is a lot to do. You can go horseback riding, rent a kayak or bike, or hit the lake and rent a pontoon boat. Just remember if you plan on exploring the campgrounds to rent a golf cart. They cost $57 for the day and must be returned prior to 11:00am the day following in which you rented it. It is kind of pricey but well worth it if you do not want to do a lot of walking.
The campground is home to Mickey's Backyard Barbecue and the Hoop Dee Doo Review. We went to the Backyard Barbecue and it was a really good time. The food was good, buffet style, and the kids had loads of fun singing and dancing with the characters and performers. The price was kind of high, but it is what I expected being Disney and all.
At night you jump on a wagon ride for about $9.00. They run two wagon times usually 7:30pm and 9:00pm. There are no reservations as it is on a first come first serve basis. So in busier seasons I would recommend getting there early.
They have two swimming pools. One is the considered the “main” pool and is where mostly everyone goes to do their swimming. The second pool is closer to the 2600 loop and when we were there, there was hardly a soul around, except for the two ducks that took up residence there. I am sure in the summer months when it is a lot hotter, more people use the pool.
The cabins themselves offered sleeping for six, although I wouldn't say it would be a comfortable six since one of the beds is a Murphy bed which leaves no room for clothing to whoever uses that option. The kitchen has a refrigerator, dishwasher, sink and stove with oven, which gives you the ability to bring and prepare your own food as opposed to paying the high prices in side the parks. The campground has two general stores called trading posts where you can buy food, however I found the supplies there are quite expensive.
The kitchen comes equipped with plates, bowls, cups, frying pans etc, to do all of your cooking and if you are in the mood for some grilling you are in luck because every cabin comes equipped with a charcoal grill that the Disney staff is nice enough to keep clean for you.
All in all I really have no complaints that would make me tell you to stay away from the Fort Wilderness campground, but also would not recommend it to someone who does not like camping and the outdoors.
