Starring Highlander's Adrian Paul, this 2007 Sci-Fi original movie about the lost colony of Roanoke provides enough scares to be rated R. While the effects are a little cheesy, it offers a creepy theory on what happened to the lost colony of Roanoke.

Based loosely on actual events with a liberal dose of fiction, the movie is set during the 1580's. It begins with the suicide of the last man alive from a small detachment left guarding an English colony founded by Sir Walter Raleigh at the north end of Roanoke Island. In 1587, Raleigh sends another group of 117 colonists, men, women and children, who the find the fort deserted except for one body. When John White (Alex McArthur) sails for England to get supplies, he leaves his son-in-law Ananias Dare (Adrian Paul) in charge as acting governor.

Soon the colonists begin to be attacked by mysterious, bloodthirsty wraiths who seem to want the Dare's newborn daughter, Virginia. Using his knowledge of the Norse language and legends as well as local Native American lore, Ananias Dare begins to piece together an explanation of what is taking place on Roanoke Island. With the help of Manteo (Michael Teh), a friendly Croatan, Dare comes up with a dangerous plan to rid the island of the Norse spirits while the body count continues to mount.

Can Dare and the colony find a way to send the wraiths to Valhalla and survive the supernatural terror?

While I can't list The Lost Colony among my favorite films, I will say that I like the fact that there is a preacher in the movie, who although somewhat ineffectual, is not villainized, which is a refreshing change from most modern movies and TV shows. The preacher even saves a room full of women and children.

If you like creepy movies,The Lost Colony offers standard horror fare and is not a bad movie for Halloween.
