How to Carve a Pumpkin

During Halloween we see a lot of pumpkins. Here are simple steps to safely carve an awesome pumpkin.

  1. Pick a pumpkin that does not fall over when left to stand on its own.  If the pumpkin falls over this could cause clumsiness with the knife and serious injury.
  2. Put newspaper down before you start carving and make sure you have a sturdy suface.
  3. Cut a round whole with a lttle tab at the top of the pumpkin. (This will make it easier to see which way the top goes back on).
  4. Scrap all of the pumpking seeds and goop out of the pumpkin.  You can save the seeds and roast them in a 350 degree oven for about 15-20 minutes then season with salt.  Make sure to rinse them first.  If the inside of the pumpkin is not level scrape the rind at the bottom so a candle will sit.
  5. Draw your outline on the pumpkin with an eye liner pencil or something that will wipe off easily.  Do not use permanent marker since this may not come off later.  Some stores offer pumpkin carving kits that have an outline drawing that you can tape to the pumpkin.
  6. After the outine is complete use a sharp knife to cut the eyes.  Never use a dull knife and always cut away from you not towards you.  Try going outside of the line so you will not have to wipe any marks off.
  7. Finish with the nose and mouth.  If you are carving a wide mouth sometimes it is easier to cut in sections.
  8. Insert a tealight inside of the pumpkin and put the top back on.
  9. Enjoy your Jack O' Lantern!
