How to Recycle Silica Gel Packets

Here's a few great tips to recycle/reuse the silica gel packets that are used to control moisture and mold in vitamins, shoes, electronics, etc.

Okay, so they say "throw away, do not eat", but what they really mean in this day of recycling is... "don't eat, and don't let your pets eat".  They really didn't mean to say throw away... that would be a waste of a great little item that can be recycled to protect valuable items.

You probably have at least a few of these little packets hanging around your house even now.  At Christmas, you'll probably get a few more -- or your friends and family will, so be sure to ask them to save them for you!

Toss a silica gel packet into a gallon size ziploc bag, and add your most important or cherished documents to keep them moisture free.  Squeeze out as much air when sealing as added protection against moisture.

Keep your silver jewelry from tarnishing by adding silica gel packets to each drawer or compartment of your jewelry box, or add a packet to your jewelry pouch when traveling.

Want to keep moisture and mold out of Fido's food? Transfer dry dog food from the original bag into a lidded trash can or other storage bin. Tape one or two silica gel packets to the inside of the lid. **Surgical or first aid tape works great! You only need to tape the ends of each packet - leaving the middle section open.

You can also add silica gel packets to bags or jars of your favorite seeds to keep them mold-free till you're ready to plant them.

** You can "re-activate" silica gel by placing them in a warm oven for 10-15 minutes.

Maybe I’ve been hasty in throwing these things away.  Great ideas for reuse.
