At Lord's cricket ground, Ricky Ponting hit the ball towards the boundary - it would be another One Day International fifty. But no, brilliantly caught, the crowd rose as one. My Nokia E71 was on my lap and when I sat down - it was in my beer!! This is the story of its fall and rise.

The cricket was following an almost inevitable course, much like the warm summer weather. Australia cruising to victory over England in the One Day International series. Lord's was full to overflowing with relaxed Poms resigned to Aussie rule. Ricky Ponting was on the verge of yet another half century. He pulled a ball onto the leg side, it was another certain boundary until he was brilliantly caught by Ravi Bopara.
The crowd rose with a roar, arms in the air. The cheering and shouting lasted for the whole of Ponting's long walk back to the pavilion. As the noise subsided and the revellers retook their seats, I had a horrible thought - where was my mobile? My new Nokia E71? I looked down and saw it - lodged in my beer. Soaked in my beer!!
Slowly, the phone emerged, dripping with beer. The advice says switch off and take the key parts out. So that was done. Each component dried and laid out in the sun. No signs of life and beer covering the screen. Maybe this was the end?
After two hours in the sun, the reconstruction began - and the screen showed some signs of life. After two days things were looking promising. The first text successfully sent. An incoming call. Two weeks and it is almost unbelievable - the phone has recovered!!
The conclusion - the Nokia E71 survives even better than Rick Ponting. A complete soaking, a screen full of beer, battery wet, soggy sim and a dripping bluetooth. But then two months on and you'd never know!!
