The Cajun cuisine is typical of the Louisiana area and it is considered very rural with added seasoning and spices and usually very hearty, and most of the ingredients are from what is found locally such as duck, okra and rice. Houston being in the neighboring state of Texas acquired several Cajun restaurants throughout the years and the following are five different ones.

The first on is the Ragin Cajun which is located at 4302 Richmond Avenue and it the original one in the city. The place is very laid back and rustic and you can enjoy either their half a bucket or a full one filled with boiled crawfish.

Then there is Boudreaux's Cajun Kitchen which is located in the Galleria area at 5475 West Loop South and their specialties are the jambalaya which is Cajun rice with tomato sauce, bell peppers, celery, shrimp and Andouille sausage, or the catfish Bienville which blackened catfish topped with shrimp and crawfish in a Monterey Jack cream sauce or the crawfish etouffee which comes over dirty rice.

A third restaurant is called Esther's Cajun Cafe Soul Food which is located in downtown Houston at 5204 Yale Street and the atmosphere of the restaurant is very cozy and friendly. The specialties of the restaurants come on Cajun Fridays where you can order fried fish or the Cajun fried chicken as well as their gumbo and oxtails. But their homemade desserts are also a must such as the banana pudding or peach cobbler.

And then there is also Floyd's Cajun Kitchen which is located at 1200 Durham Street in the heights area and the atmosphere is very low key and homey and the prices are low as well. And their best foods are the boiled crawfish and the crawfish etouffee which tastes like homemade.

And a fifth Cajun restaurant is Zydeco Louisiana Diner which is located downtown at 1119 Pease Street and it has been in business for over twenty years. Zydeco is perfect if you work in the area and want something different for lunch but good; you can get their shrimp, oyster or catfish po-boys or the seafood gumbo or you can try one of their weekday specials like for example on Mondays you can order the chicken and sausage Creole or Fridays try the stuffed pork chops with jambalaya, or the seafood courtboullion on Thursdays for a real taste of Cajun food.
