How to Build a Fish Scaler

Removing scales while cleaning your catch of the day is tough--but making and using this fish scaler is a breeze. Use recycled items to build your own fish scaler in less than 10 minutes. Super easy directions. Great as a gift to the fishing folks in your life or as a kids project for gifts to grandparents. Christmas gift idea.

Having used a friend's fish scaler and finding it worked so good.  It takes less time, less mess and does a great job removing scales. I went straight home and built my own. This project only took me about 5 minutes once I gathered what I needed. You will need the following used items:

  • 8 Metal Bottle Caps (Don't bend them when you remove from bottle)
  • 8 Screws
  • A Screwdriver or Drill (Drill with screwdriver bit works best)
  • 5" Long 2x4 Block
  • Grandkids (Optional)

Drink 8 beverages that are packaged in bottles with metal caps. Now this part could really be fun, but thankfully you will have your project completed before any of your "juice" kicks in.  Or, you can obtain help from the grandkids by supplying enough root beer for all and saving the 8 metal bottle caps needed for this project. The kids will no doubt think step one is the best part.

Cut your block of wood to the right length and width (about 5" long and 3" wide) so all the bottle caps will fit on it when placed 2 wide and 4 long.

Place the bottle caps on the block with the smooth (or top) side down on the block. Secure them with a screw through the center of the cap onto the block, making sure the edges of the bottle caps are touching each other.

You're done. Told you it was super easy to make.  You can also add a strip of sandpaper or some other gripping material to the top to keep your hand from slipping if you want to.

 Tips & Warnings

  • Reward the kids with a fishing trip, it's a great time to test out the new fish scaler together.
  • When using the fish scaler, keep a bucket of water handy to swish the build-up of scales off the fish scaler.
  • Caution should be exercised with the operation of hand and electric tools.
