Convert Millimeters to Inches
I quick guide on how to convert imperial (American) measures to metric (rest of world) measures.
Meters are a measurement of length, and metric rulers and tape measures are graduated in Meters. These are broken down into 100 centimeters, which in turn are broken into 10 millimeters. Centimeters are 1/100th of a meter. Likewise millimeters are 1/1000th of a meter. Therefore 25.4 or 25&4/10th millimeters equals one inch. A good rule of thumb to use is that an inch is approximately 2 ½ centimeters, but if you need more accuracy,
Step1
Measure a length with a tape measure or ruler. If you use a metric ruler then convert this measure into the Imperial measure. There are rulers available that have both imperial and metric measurements already graduated on them butthese won’t necessarily line up.
Step2
Convert the millimeter measurement to inches by dividing the millimeter figure by 25.4. For instance if the length measured is 2,540 mm you will divide this by 25.4. eg 2540mm = 100” 25.4
Step3
To convert from an Imperial (Inches) measure do the converse. Multiply the inches measurement by 25.4. Using the above example, 100” x 25.4 = 2540mm
Step4
If you are still having trouble converting imperial measurements to metric, most cell phones have a unit conversion feature in the ‘tools’ menu.
Tips
There is no equivalent for a foot in metric. 1 foot is 304.8mm (millimeters).
A yard is slightly shorter than a meter. 1 yard is 914.4 mm.
A meter is slightly longer than a yard. 1 meter is 39.38 “
There are approximately 3 mm in 1/8th inch.
1mm is approximately 1/25th inch
