How to care for an Black and White TEgu

If you have a black and white Tegu then you should know that their very loving reptiles and love the attention from you. When you get a Tegu you need to know that there a very big responsibility and the Tegu gets 5 to 6 feet. There are many people out there that say Tegu are mean, but that’s not true. Giving the Tegu the attention and love he or she need’s will have the Tegu sleeping in your arms like a lap dog. The things you will need when having a Tegu.

  • Shallow water container
  • Full spectrum fluorescent light
  • Book about tegus
  • Vitamin/mineral supplement
  • Incandescent light or ceramic heater
  • Non toxic plants
  • Branches logs or cork bark,
  • Substrate,
  • Heat source
  • Thermometer
  • STEP 1

    First step in taking care of a tegu is making sure the black and white tegu is comfortable with its environment. The things to do are to make sure you have all the items listed on things you need. After that making the black and white tegu’s cage the way he or she wants it makes them conferrable. The black and white tegu needs a hiding place and a place to soak his body for hydration. Tegu’s like to bask in their water at times and then go back to their hide box. They hide most of their lives in a hide box.

    STEP 2

    Next, you will need to have the Heating they need during all times of the day. Always make sure you don’t put the light to low for the tegu to get burned. This results in injury, which leads to un happy tegu. The tegu needs to be around 100F to 90 during all times unless in hide box.

    STEP 3

    After you get the heating arranged you should work on getting the UV lights in the right place. The uv light needs to be on them for at least 12 hrs a day. When you get all the lights taken care of make sure you have limb or tree for them to climb on.

    STEP 4

    After the cage is complete you should know introduce the tegu to food. A baby tegu eats pin head crickets until the juvenile stage. Feed the babies daily to assure their growth. When there juvenile stage comes about you need to introduce pinky mice to the diet. Also for treats boiled eggs. But be careful they get spoiled and can only want boiled eggs. Also feed juveniles daily too. When the adult stage comes near they eat only 2 times a week. The adult stage is when they get interesting. The food they eat then can be frozen mice or live. Be careful with live mice because they can hurt your tegu. You can as long as you supervise them. The tegu also can eat cat food and tegu food. Also adults can eat chicken that has been cooked. They love chicken.

    STEP 5

    Next making sure you give the tegu’s the supplements they need to get passed MD. This means dusting the crickets when there little and gut loading them. Always making sure they get the calcium they need is going to allow the bones to grow correctly. Do not give them more then directed it will make them have bowel problems and may kill them.

    STEP 6

    Next the most important thing is to hold them at least once a day to get them to like you. This will show them that being held is safe and secured. My tegu loves being petted and climbs in my lab to be petted. Just like any animal out there today you need to take time to play with them.
