The book Nontechnical Guide to Petroleum Geology, Exploration, Drilling and Production (2nd Edition)is one of the best for anyone entering the oil and gas industry on anyone currently in the business to brush up with.

Now that the oil industry is in a slump is a good time for those in the industry to brush up on current technology in areas of the oilfield they may not be familiar with.

One of the best books, used for years by training programs such as those by Schlumberger, is "A Primer Of Oilwell Drilling" by Ron Baker. Unfortunately new issues are sold out and used ones cost upward of $100. Many traning programs are instead using the following book:

Nontechnical Guide to Petroleum Geology, Exploration, Drilling and Production (2nd Edition)

by author Norman J Hyne, Phd.

It does a good job of covering the basics of how oil and gas wells are drilled but also delves into more complicated issues such as directional drilling, hydraulic fracturing and well stimulation.

It takes you from the geological theory about how oil was created, the scientific means by which it is detected under the ground using seismic methods to the drilling of a well and hooking of that well up to a pipeline which takes the product to a refinery.

About the only aspect of drilling that is not mentioned in the book is coal bed methane recovery. It contains a large glossary of oilfield terms at the back and some oilfield slang terms.

It takes you through the steps of drilling a well, from spud and suface casing to drilling a vertical oil or gas well or a horizontal well.

Norman J. Hyne, whose doctorate is in Petroleum Engineering takes good care to not overwhelm the reader with complex terminology but instead use common terms to explain highly complex processes.

As someone who has used this book in my own training program I highly reccomend it.

Five stars to the book Nontechnical Guide to Petroleum Geology, Exploration, Drilling and Production.
